How It All Started
In 1980, Dave Jones had the vision to plant a church in the South Bay area of San Diego County. Renting a facility at the Masonic Lodge in Chula Vista, the first service of Gospel Light Tabernacle was held with three families totaling about a dozen people. As they drove to church throughout the week, Dave and his wife, Mary, would pray at the interchange of Highway 54 and Interstate 805 that the Lord would provide a new location for the church in that area. In one year, they moved to this very location and the ministry was renamed Gospel Light Bible Church.
After a few years, the church needed more space for their developing Christian school, and down below their property was an eight-acre lot of undeveloped land. Despite having no money and limited manpower, the land was acquired through a series of miracles, and a new facility was built in the fall of 1994. To better reflect the wider community that the congregation could serve, in 1997 the church was renamed South Bay Community Church.
Dave has officially transitioned into retirement. Since then, William Frye, and his wife, Maddi, have continued to lead and pastor South Bay Community Church. We are excited for the future and to see how the Lord will continue to work through South Bay Community Church in its next season!
